The Atlanta Falcons hope a young and promising defense is maturing at the perfect time.
The bend-but-not-break determination of a unit that relied on six starters with three years of experience or fewer helped make the difference in Sunday night’s 21-14 victory against the Chicago Bears.
“I think a lot of the young guys grew up (Sunday night),” said 11th-year linebacker Mike Peterson, signed as a free agent for his sure tackling and his unwavering leadership. “In this league, you got to play all the way, four quarters, and they had a chance to see that.”
Atlanta (4-1) was able to prevent sloppy Chicago from scoring on three of its four trips into the red zone. The Bears’ first possession set the tone when second-year safety Thomas DeCoud produced the first of his two interceptions, at the Falcons’ 9.
